Whether you take the occasional RV trip in your travel trailer or you live in one full-time, proper maintenance is very important. It can make a huge difference both in terms of performance and overall lifespan. That is why Sunny Island RV has created this guide to keeping your travel trailer maintained.

Consult Your Owner’s Manual

Don’t just dive into the maintenance process straightaway. Consult your owner’s manual to see what your travel trailer’s manufacturer recommends for your specific make and model. The owner’s manual will serve as your primary resource for every maintenance task that needs to be done, as well as helping you to locate specific parts for your camper.

Inspect the Exterior and Interior

Check the outside of your travel trailer for signs of damage. Be on the lookout for rust, dents, and grime that might necessitate a thorough cleaning, leaks, and water damage. Climb up onto the roof as well to check for cracks and other signs of a future leak. You should also check if your vents need to be cleaned.

Follow this up by checking the interior of your travel trailer. Look for things like water leaks, malfunctioning appliances, squeaky slide-outs, mold, mildew, and debris that need to be removed. Remember that a small problem that you ignore now can eventually grow into a much larger problem.

Check Tires

Every vehicle needs to ride on a good, solid set of tires. Use a tire pressure gauge to measure the pressure and inflate it to the manufacturer’s recommended level. You should also inspect the sidewalls for any cracks, and ensure that the tread is deep enough, with no objects embedded into the tire.

Cover It Up

If possible, store your travel trailer indoors to keep it safe from rain, debris, animal infestations, and theft. If you must store it outdoors, use a well-fitting waterproof cover to keep water and debris off of your RV.

Plan Ahead for Next Season

While winterizing and de-winterizing your travel trailer may feel tedious, it is very important that you follow all of the steps correctly. Not doing so can result in major damage to your RV, leading to a considerable repair bill. Make sure that your RV is prepared to withstand winter temperatures before you put it into storage.
