Beginner’s Guide to Driving a Motorhome
Learning to drive a motorhome is no easy feat! These rigs are large and in charge and, as a result, are very tricky to learn to maneuver. Thankfully, we’ve written up the helpful tips below to help you master driving your motorhome and ensure you’re prepared for your upcoming trip on the open road.
Braking & Accelerating
Braking and accelerating in your motorhome will be very different from your car. Because these models are so large and weighty, it takes them much longer to stop, start, and build up speed. As a result, many first-time motorhome owners end up accidentally running stop lights and stop signs because they accelerated too hard and braked too late. To ensure you don’t make this mistake, we recommend finding an empty parking lot to practice braking and accelerating in until you get the hang of things.
Turning & Reversing
Turning and reversing in a motorhome is another difficult skill you’ll need to get the hang of before you hit the open road. If possible, we recommend taking short trips around residential areas to practice tackling corners and twisting roads. To get the hang of reversing your rig, we recommend grabbing a few small traffic cones and setting up a spot in front of your home to practice with. This way, if you do end up making a mistake, you’ve only damaged one of your cones rather than hit an important piece of property.
