Double J Campground (Chatham, IL)
Located just south of Illinois’ state capital of Springfield, Chatham is right in the middle of the state. Exuding a small-town charm, Chatham provides visitors with a railroad museum, the historic Caldwell Farmstead, the Interurban Trail (offering a mixed-use path that parallels railroad tracks), and the historic Sugar Creek Covered Bridge. Visitors to the town can also plan their trips around a few summer events, such as the Chatham American Legion Homecoming Festival that takes place in the town square every June, and the Chatham Sweet Corn Festival in July.
This campground is open year-round for all-season camping so you can enjoy the full variety of Midwestern seasons, from hot summers to snowy winters. The park provides 120 full hookup campsites with picnic tables and fire rings. The Welcome Center has a convenience store for supplies and snacks. Giant City State Park (Makanda, IL)
The small town of Makanda is nestled in the southern tip of the state and part of the Carbondale micropolitan area. It offers visitors some unique opportunities in terms of festivals. The Makanda Spring Fest is a yearly two-day event featuring local artists and musicians, while the Makanda Vulture Fest occurs every October, celebrating the migration of the black vulture and turkey vulture to the region.
Giant City State Park is built for those who love the outdoors. Beautiful landscapes and recreational opportunities abound, from fishing ponds scattered throughout the park to hikes through the surrounding Shawnee National Forest filled with ferns, moss, wildflowers and over 75 varieties of tall trees. The surrounding sandstone bluffs give the park its name. There are 85 Class A campsites for trailers and tent camping. These provide water and power hookups along with sanitary and shower facilities. A gift shop, lodge, and restaurant are in the park to provide souvenirs, supplies, indoor relaxation, and fine dining for visitors.
Sycamore RV Resort (Sycamore, IL)
The town of Sycamore was founded in 1837, the same year as the founding of neighboring metropolis Chicago, which is only an hour’s drive west. This gives the town a long and rich history, with many buildings that are over a century old. You can choose to visit the surrounding town’s attractions or head into the big city for a day trip from this north-central campsite.
